HOW IT STARTED
I'll never forget my first panic attack. I was on a train on the way home from work when all of a sudden I had a strange
feeling in my chest, like it was being crushed. I was finding it difficult to breath. Not wanting to draw attention to myself in front of all the people on the train, I silently tried to breath slowly but it only seemed to get worse. I began to sweat, feel dizzy, and I was sure I was about to pass out. I became so terrified that I just wanted to get up and run away.
But that wasn't the end. I had another similar experience the following day, and then at regular intervals after that. One day, convinced I was having a heart attack, I sought medical attention, but after extensive tests they kept telling me that nothing was wrong with me physically. A doctor said that it could be anxiety and that I should see a counsellor.
I went to see a specialist and he confirmed that I was suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. I felt like my world was crashing around me. How was I going to keep my job, support my family, or even just have a normal life? What did it all mean, and was I ever going to recover?
THE INITIAL TREATMENT
My doctor put me on anti-anxiety and anti-depression medication immediately. Unfortunately, this seemed to do more harm than good for me. After several days I felt worse than before, so my doctor changed me to another type of medication. But again after several days I was just feeling worse and worse, and the panic attacks were becoming more frequent and more severe.
My doctor also recommended that I see a psychologist, who talked to me about reducing stress in my life, and taught me some "coping techniques" to help me get through panic attacks. But I didn't want to "get through" them, I wanted to not have them at all! I worked with the psychologist for quite a while and, although the advice he gave was OK, it just wasn't giving me the results I wanted, because I was still having panic attacks fairly regularly.

In the end one thing that made a big difference to me, and put me on the road to recovery, was overcoming the fear of panic attacks.
